DUBLIN: The Republic of Ireland were shocked with a 1-0 defeat by the Luxembourg dwarfs in the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign in Dublin.
The defeat at home was considered quite embarrassing by his captain, Seamus Coleman.
Dynamo Kiev midfielder Gerson Rodrigues blasted home the game’s lone goal to give Ireland their second straight defeat in Group A.
“It was a very bad and embarrassing night. We got what we deserved which was nothing.
“I don’t think we were trying to get the ball in earnest and looked like we wanted to subdue them as quickly as possible,” Coleman said.
Ireland currently sit bottom of the group without any points, four behind leaders Serbia and Portugal who drew 2-2 in Belgrade.
Luxembourg is just one point behind the top two teams after a surprise victory for the small country in the World Cup qualifying campaign.
Luxembourg have never qualified for a major tournament and have a slim chance of getting past the five -cornered Group A rivalry for a place in Qatar next year.
