Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman admits the upcoming ‘El Clasico’ match is more important than usual with the LaLiga title being his bet.
The Catalan held off league leaders Atletico Madrid by one point from a 1-0 win over Real Valladolid earlier this morning, with Real Madrid in third place by two points.
Atletico dropped points for the fifth time in their last eight games including a 0-1 defeat to Sevilla, yesterday, which indirectly made the title race even more widespread.
Barcelona travel to the Spanish capital to meet Madrid early on Sunday morning, while Atletico face fifth -placed Real Betis.
“I think Clasico action is always important,” Koeman said.
“Of course, this time it may be more important because of the situation in the league as we and Real Madrid are competing fiercely with Atletico Madrid for the title this season.
“Of course, this is a tough match involving two giant teams in a major clash in the world, so of course the result is important for us in order to brighten the chances of winning the title.”
Barcelona will advance to El Clasico with a very impressive league performance after winning the last six games and have not lost in 19 games.
Madrid have also not fallen in their last nine league games while winning the previous three games.
“It’s very important to win tonight to get close to Atletico by one point now,” Koeman added.
“But Madrid are also approaching them so it will blow our emotions until the end of the season.
“We worked well. We were confident of winning this title but as we see today, every game is tough.”
