LONDON: Harry Kane has risen to brush off criticism of his performance in Euro 2020 by insisting he deserves to be in the England squad.
The England striker’s quality of play remains in question despite scoring his first goal of the tournament as The Three Lions beat Germany 2-0 in the last 16.
England manager Gareth Southgate also hinted that his team captain would follow in the footsteps of Alan Shearer who showed resurgence during Euro 1996.
Kane, 27, said: “I play on the field for a reason, so of course people out there, supporters, commentators and the media also have their own opinions.
“But I am the one who is here, I am the one who did it and I am also the only one who believes 100 per cent in my own abilities as well as working hard to be in this position.
“I’m not listed on the field for stale reasons, instead working hard all my life by dedicating my whole life to being there. So when I’m out there (on the field), I’m so focused, especially as a striker.
“Maybe when you haven’t scored a goal or the opportunity hasn’t yet come up, (you) just have to be prepared for what’s to come and that’s what happens.”
Kane also defended his overall performance after former England stars Shearer, Rio Ferdinand and Jamie Carragher claimed he had not done enough for the team in four games so far.
The Spurs star said: “I’m the captain of this team, so I try to lead by setting an example, not just with the ball or without the ball, whether it’s about conversation or helping others.”
Kane also revealed that he motivates the players ‘heart to heart’ every time before the match starts.
“It’s about being more than just a goal scorer. I have a responsibility to the team.
“A lot of what I try to do. Words (criticism) outside, that’s just words. I focus a lot on other things.”
Southgate is scheduled to list Kane, who has a goal at Euro 2020, for the quarter -final clash against Ukraine in Rome.
Former England striker Shearer arrived at Euro 1996 without scoring after two years, but won the Golden Shoe Award after scoring five goals.
