LIVERPOOL: Everton’s chances of finishing the Premier League in the top four are brighter after Richarlison’s shot gave Southampton a 1-0 win.
Carlo Ancelotti’s squad won for the first time in six league games at home as a result of Richarlison’s early goal.
The last time Everton won at Goodison Park was against Arsenal before Christmas last year, but they ended a row of three consecutive defeats at home to close the gap with fourth-placed West Ham to just two points.
The Toffees are currently seventh and play less than one game against West Ham, Liverpool and Chelsea, which will be a barrier to tickets to next season’s Champions League qualifiers.
After beating Liverpool 2-0 for the first win over neighbors Merseyside at Anfield since 1999, Everton have a good chance of finishing in the top four.
“It was a good week. I really appreciate the teamwork. We are very focused on defending and having a good coupling at the front line.
“The performance was excellent and we deserved to win. To compete for European tickets, we had to be better at home.
“This kind of performance can help us. Our dream is to finish in the top four this season. We are getting closer,” said Ancelotti.
After leading the English top league for the first time since 1988 in November, Southampton’s performance declined sharply and put them just seven points above the relegation zone.
Southampton have not won in their last nine league games, losing eight times since their win over Liverpool in December.
“30 points is not enough to stay in the league. We need points,” said Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.
